Converting animated WEBP to GIF is, technically, the most clearly backward step among all the conversions on this site. It has to be said up front, because any conversion done without the right expectation ends in disappointment.

Why does the quality drop?
The colour limit. WEBP's million-colour frames are reduced to 256 colours. Smooth gradients turn into stepped bands, fine tonal differences disappear, photographic textures flatten. That reduction is permanent.
The dithering pattern. The dots scattered to hide the banding look like a sandy texture up close. It is as though noise has been added on top of a clean animation.
Loss of transparency quality. Thanks to its alpha channel, WEBP stores 256 distinct levels of opacity per pixel; edges blend smoothly into the background. GIF supports only binary transparency — a pixel is either fully transparent or fully opaque. Semi-transparent pixels get rounded to one extreme and smooth edges become jagged, like a staircase.
Step-by-step conversion
1. Check whether it is genuinely necessary. Open the target platform and try uploading an animated WEBP. If it accepts it, do not convert. Most modern browsers and major platforms now support it; the problem usually arises with email clients, older forum software and corporate systems.
2. Plan the resolution up front. GIF file size grows quickly with resolution. Know where and at what size the animation will be displayed. There is no benefit in converting at 1200 pixels an animation that will appear 400 pixels wide in an email — the file simply triples.
