AVI is Microsoft's container from the nineties, and today it is used almost never for new content production. But on external drives, in old backups, in DVD archives and in digitised family videos, millions of AVI files are still sitting there.

The reason is that AVI's golden age was also MP3's golden age. In a great many AVI files produced in the nineties and two thousands, the audio track inside is already in MP3 form.

What can be inside an AVI?

Because it is an old container, AVI carries a range of audio codecs from its era:

  • MP3: the most common scenario, especially in film and series archives compressed with DivX/Xvid. Lossy, but already our target format.
  • AC3 (Dolby Digital): frequent in DVD-sourced transfers. Lossy, often multichannel.
  • PCM (uncompressed): in old camera recordings, VHS digitisations and raw footage. Raw data, takes up a lot of space.
  • ADPCM: a lightly compressed variant of PCM, seen in old game videos and low capacity recording devices.
  • WMA: rarely, in some files produced on the Windows side.

Looking at that list the situation becomes clear. Only in the first item is a lossless copy possible. In every other case moving to MP3 is a re-encode: the audio is first decoded, then compressed from scratch with the MP3 algorithm, and that process inevitably discards a certain amount of information.

Moving to MP3 from an already lossy source such as AC3 can make the loss slightly more noticeable, because the two formats discard different information and the losses stack on top of each other. If the source is PCM or ADPCM the situation is better — compression starts from a clean source.

Step by step

1. Upload the file
