Why are you converting the HEIC archive?

If you use an iPhone, your photo archive is most likely in HEIC. Apple made that choice for a good reason: thanks to HEVC-based compression, HEIC stores the same visual quality with markedly less data than JPG. From a phone-storage standpoint it is an excellent decision.

The trouble starts once the archive leaves the phone. Windows only opens HEIC after you install an extra codec. Websites, upload forms, sharing platforms and plenty of desktop programs do not recognise the file at all. So you end up with an archive that is technically excellent and practically unusable.

WEBP is a sensible target here. It is modern, efficient, broadly supported in browsers, and it has both a lossy and a lossless mode. This article walks through the conversion step by step — and sets a realistic expectation about size.

First, let's fix the size expectation

The title of this article says "save space," but to be honest we need to be clear about where the savings actually come from.

WEBP's famous size advantage is against JPG. At the same visual quality, WEBP produces files roughly a quarter to a third smaller than JPG. That is a real, measurable gain.

But HEIC is already a very efficient format. When you move from HEIC to lossy WEBP, the file size can stay at a similar level and on some photos grow slightly. In other words, "my archive will halve when I turn HEIC into WEBP" is not a realistic expectation.

Choosing lossless mode for an entire archive delivers no visible benefit in exchange for the disk cost you pay.

Post-conversion checklist

Once the conversion is complete, verify the following:

Do the file counts match? The number of HEIC files in the source folder should equal the number of WEBP files in the output folder. If any are missing, you probably have a corrupt or unsupported file.

Was the date information preserved? Capture dates are critical to archive organisation. Check the metadata of a few files after the conversion. If it has been lost, consider adopting a filename scheme that carries the date.

Does the target platform accept WEBP? If you plan to upload the archive to a cloud service, a website or a sharing platform, confirm that platform's WEBP support in advance.
