What Is HEIC and Why Doesn't It Open on Windows?

Most iPhone users notice it one day: the photos they transfer to their computer no longer end in .jpg but in .heic. Some open on Windows, some do not. When you try to upload one to a site it gets rejected. When you drag it into an older image editor, nothing happens.

What exactly is HEIC
HEIC is the photo format Apple made the default on modern iPhones. Its technical foundation rests on HEVC, the technology used in video compression. Video compression advanced far beyond still-image compression over the years; HEIC adapts that progress to single-frame photographs.

Consider changing the setting at the source. If you regularly transfer to Windows, you can use the most compatible format option in the iPhone's camera settings and have the device produce JPG directly. The conversion step disappears entirely; in return you spend more storage on the device.
Leave the archive as it is. As long as you stay within Apple devices, there is no problem with HEIC and it saves space. Converting the entire library to JPG when there is no need brings both a storage increase and an unnecessary round of loss on every file. Convert the photos you need, as you need them.
How you transfer the photo also changes the outcome
Whether you run into the HEIC problem at all also depends on how you moved the photo from phone to computer, and this is frequently overlooked.

By contrast, some transfer methods and many messaging apps automatically convert the photo to JPG when sending — which is why the same photo can cause no trouble when sent one way and cause trouble when transferred another.
The important detail here is this: the paths that convert automatically usually also resize the image and apply aggressive compression. So you get a file that opens without a hitch, but you have received a copy noticeably lower in quality than the original. If the photo's full resolution matters to you, transferring the file in its raw state and doing the conversion yourself in a controlled way gives a better result.
What to check after converting
After converting a HEIC archive to JPG, verifying a few points saves you from surprises later.
Was the resolution preserved? Check that the output's pixel dimensions match the original. Some tools downsize silently.
Are the colors right? Because HEIC can store a wide color range, a shift can appear — especially in vivid tones — if color management is not handled correctly during the conversion. Open a few photos side by side with their originals and compare.
Is the date information still there? If the photos' capture date is lost in the conversion, your archive loses its chronological ordering. That is an annoying loss to discover after converting hundreds of photos.
Did you keep the originals? Do not delete the HEIC files until you have verified the conversion. There is no way back from JPG to HEIC's quality.
The Live Photo and multi-image question
