There is a second price and it usually gets skipped over: converting to ProRes does not increase quality. If your source was compressed with H.264, the lost detail does not come back. What you gain is not quality but smoothness and the absence of accumulating loss across repeated edits.

A criterion-by-criterion comparison

Editing smoothness. Working with ProRes inside MOV is markedly smoother. Working with H.264 inside MP4 struggles, especially on long, high-resolution recordings. But let us repeat: what delivers the gain is the codec, not the container.

Disk usage. MP4 is clearly ahead here. H.264 files are small. Working with ProRes demands serious disk space, and on large projects that quickly becomes a problem.

Preparation time. You can start working directly with MP4. Moving to ProRes requires a conversion round first; that is a genuine re-encode and can run for minutes on long, large files.

Quality preservation. When working with ProRes, loss does not accumulate between intermediate versions, because the codec works almost losslessly. If you open and save an H.264 file over and over, a little more loss is added each round. On long, multi-stage projects that difference matters.

Compatibility. MP4 opens everywhere. MOV, especially if it contains ProRes, can cause trouble in non-Apple environments and in some programs.

The delivery stage. This is indisputably MP4's territory. If the video is going to be watched, uploaded or shared, MP4 is the safest format.

So what should you do in practice?

Short, simple projects (a video a few minutes long, limited cutting). Work directly with MP4. Do not go to the trouble of converting; modern computers usually handle short H.264 recordings without difficulty.

Long or complex projects (a multi-layer timeline, colour correction, effects). Moving to MOV files containing ProRes will make your job easier. If you have the disk space, that investment pays for itself.

If the editing program will not accept MP4 at all. In that case you need to move to MOV.
