N-up: How to Combine Multiple PDF Pages onto One Sheet

You're about to print a thirty-page presentation but you don't want to burn thirty sheets of paper. Or you want a compact printout to review a code listing, or you need to reduce the page count of a draft so you can carry it around. N-up is exactly for this: it places multiple PDF pages onto a single sheet in a grid layout.
What N-up does and doesn't do
The N-up operation shrinks the source pages and places them onto a new sheet. When you say "4-up," four source pages are arranged on one output sheet in a 2×2 grid. Your page count drops to a quarter.
What it doesn't do matters too:
- It doesn't change the content. Text doesn't reflow, line breaks don't change. Each mini page is a scaled-down exact copy of the original page.
- It doesn't shrink the file. All the content is still there, just squeezed onto fewer sheets. The size usually stays the same or grows slightly.
- It doesn't make a booklet. N-up and booklet layout are different things. In a booklet the pages are arranged so they read in the right order once the sheet is folded down the middle (8 and 1 on the first sheet, 2 and 7 on its back). N-up arranges them in straight order.
Step 1: Decide how many pages to fit
This is the most critical decision, and the only thing that determines the right answer is the source document's point size.
Simple math: in the N-up operation each page shrinks by roughly 1/√N. At 4-up the linear reduction is 1/2, so 11-point text gives the effect of 5.5 points. At 9-up it drops to 1/3 and 11 points becomes 3.7 points — unreadable.

The practical rule: don't go past 2-up on dense text documents. Presentation slides use large fonts and little text, so they hold up at 4-up and sometimes even 6-up. Code listings usually work well at 2-up because code pages tend to be half empty.
A realistic test method: if you want to try 4-up, first extract a few pages, make them 4-up, print them and make sure you can genuinely read them. Output that looks readable on screen may not be readable on paper — especially with thin fonts and non-laser printers.
Step 2: Choose the right page orientation
This step is the most common cause of wasted paper and ugly output.
If your source pages are portrait (normal A4):
- For 2-up, make the output sheet landscape. Two portrait pages sit nicely side by side on a landscape sheet.
- For 4-up, the output can stay portrait. A 2×2 grid is balanced on a portrait sheet.
If your source pages are landscape (presentation slides usually are):
- For 2-up, make the output portrait. Two landscape slides stack vertically on a portrait sheet.
- For 4-up, landscape output gives a better result.
What happens if you pick the wrong orientation? The content fits, but with large empty areas around it. If you do portrait pages 2-up on a portrait sheet, for example, the two pages stack vertically and each one narrows far too much; wide white bands form on the sides. You save paper but give up legibility for no reason.
Step 3: Run the operation

Things to watch in the output:
When the page count doesn't divide evenly. If you make a 30-page document 4-up, you get 8 sheets and two mini pages on the last sheet come out blank. That's normal, not a problem.

Look at the print preview. Enter the preview with Ctrl+P and make sure "Fit to page" or "Scale" is off. If the printer driver shrinks the file one more time, legibility drops severely.
Don't collide with the printer's own N-up feature. Most printer drivers have a "pages per sheet" setting. If you already made the file 4-up and the printer is set to 2 pages per sheet, the result is 8-up and nothing is readable. Verify that setting is 1 in the driver.
Test-print one sheet. Especially at 4-up and above, don't print 100 pages before seeing that you can genuinely read it on real paper.
Consider double-sided printing. Combining N-up with double-sided printing compounds the saving: 4-up plus double-sided = 8 pages per sheet, so an 80-page document becomes 10 sheets.

4-up plus double-sided cuts paper use to an eighth. But remember: legibility drops by the same factor. Printing a contract 4-up is pointless; printing a speaker's copy of a presentation 4-up makes perfect sense.
When not to use N-up
- On legal, official or to-be-signed documents. A shrunken contract doesn't look valid and isn't readable.
- On documents already set in small type. Footnote-heavy academic texts, technical specifications.
- On documents with detailed figures and charts. Axis labels and data points become unreadable.
- To reduce file size. N-up doesn't do that; a compression tool does.
- For on-screen reading. N-up is for printing. If you're reading on screen, the normal single-page layout is always better.
