Do you actually need this conversion?

Unlike our other format guides, this one has to start with a question, because converting PNG to TIFF is an operation most users do not actually need.

The reason is simple: PNG is already lossless. Your image's pixel data is preserved in full and carries no compression artefacts. When you convert to TIFF you move that data into a different container — you do not make it any better.

So quality cannot be the justification for the conversion. What can?

Legitimate reasons

1. A workflow requires TIFF

This is the most common reason. Printers, publishers, document management systems, corporate archives and some scientific databases demand TIFF as a matter of technical specification. Although PNG is a lossless and well-regarded format, the established standard in these workflows is TIFF.

In that case the choice is not yours; you have to convert the file to the requested format.

2. Creating a multi-page file

This is TIFF's clearest advantage over PNG. A single .tif file can hold more than one image — all the pages of a scan, a document series, an image sequence.

PNG cannot do this; every PNG is a single image. If you have PNG files page by page and you need to gather them into one document, TIFF offers a solution.

3. Entering a print workflow

TIFF supports the CMYK colour space and embedded ICC colour profiles; PNG works only with RGB. A file entering the print chain has to be managed in CMYK, and PNG cannot support that step.

But take care: converting a PNG to TIFF does not automatically make the file CMYK. The file stays RGB; colour space conversion is a separate operation.

If there are transparent areas in your PNG, this step is critical.

TIFF supports the alpha channel, so there is no obstacle as far as the format goes. But TIFF is an extremely flexible container and not every program interprets every variant the same way. Some print and document software may disregard the alpha channel and show transparent areas as a solid colour — usually white or black.

Ask the party you are delivering the file to in advance whether they support transparency. In print work, transparency is usually managed by flattening it in the design application rather than being left to the file format.

3. Expect the file size to increase

The resulting TIFF will be noticeably larger than the source PNG. This can be confusing because both formats are lossless — how can the same data take up more space?

The answer lies in compression efficiency. PNG uses a fairly effective lossless compression algorithm. TIFF, by default, can store the data uncompressed. When the same pixel data is stored less efficiently, the file grows.

When should you stay with PNG?

Do not convert in the following situations:

  • The image will be used on the web. TIFF does not display in browsers. PNG is universally supported.
  • The file will be shared by email or messaging. PNG is far more practical in terms of both size and compatibility.
  • You are only thinking "let it be higher quality". There is no gain, only wasted disk space.
  • Transparency is critical and the other party's support is uncertain. PNG's alpha support is interpreted far more consistently.

In summary

Converting PNG to TIFF is a completely neutral operation as far as quality goes — data is moved between two lossless formats, and nothing is gained or lost.
