  • Check that file durations match the source.
  • Listen through at least one file from start to finish.
  • Did you get the size saving you expected? If the gain is surprisingly small, the source may simply be a very dense or noisy recording; this is normal.

5. Add your tags

This is where the real gain begins. Your WAV files were probably untagged or incompletely tagged. Once you move to FLAC, you can reliably add title, artist, album, year, track number, and album artwork. Common problems

Conversion is taking longer than I expected. You may have chosen a high compression level. Dropping from level 8 to level 5 shortens the time noticeably while the size difference is usually small. Also, because WAV files are large, the upload stage takes longer than with other formats; this is normal.

The output file will not open in my player. Your source may be multichannel or high resolution. FLAC supports these, but some older players and embedded devices expect only a standard stereo configuration. Test your target device with a sample file beforehand.

Some files are missing after batch processing. If the source folder contains non-WAV files (CUE, text, images), those are not converted, and that is normal.   • CD burning. The standard itself is uncompressed PCM.
  • Embedding short sound effects in a game engine. The absence of decoding latency is preferred.
