What Is WMV? Why Does the WMV3 Codec Cause Problems?

Where did WMV come from?

In the early 2000s, video on Windows meant, to a large extent, Windows Media. Microsoft had built an integrated system containing its player (Windows Media Player), its container and its codecs, and in that era the system worked rather well.

WMV's (Windows Media Video) biggest claim in those years was compression efficiency. Compared with the codecs going around in the AVI container, it could deliver similar visual quality in smaller files. In an era when video was downloaded over slow connections, that was a serious advantage. Corporate training videos, screen recordings, Windows Movie Maker output — they all became WMV.

Today, though, you mostly find these files while rummaging through an old folder, and you most likely cannot open them.

Container and codec: a three-way confusion in WMV

In other format discussions there are two layers: the container (the box that holds the file together) and the codec (how the picture is compressed). With WMV things are a little more tangled, because the naming is misleading.

The container of a file with a .wmv extension is actually called ASF (Advanced Systems Format). This container, which Microsoft designed for video and audio streams, is the structure underlying both the .wmv and .wma extensions.

Inside that ASF container you typically find the following:

  • Video: WMV3 (Windows Media Video 9) or its standardised form, VC-1
  • Audio: WMA (Windows Media Audio)

So the word 'WMV' gets used as though it described both the container and the codec, but technically the container is ASF and the codec is WMV3.

Why does it fail to open on so many devices?

The answer lies not in a design fault but in strategy.

WMV was developed not as an open standard but as a part of the Microsoft ecosystem. VC-1 was later turned into a formal standard and was used on Blu-ray discs for a period, but H.264 won the race for widespread adoption.

H.264 winning was not purely a matter of technical superiority. Because H.264 was adopted across the industry, device manufacturers began producing dedicated hardware circuits that decode this codec. The phone, television or tablet in your hands today decodes H.264 video with almost no load on the processor at all. Hardware support of that kind never became widespread for WMV3.

The result:

  • On Mac and iPhone there is no native support
  • On most Android phones the default player will not open it
  • Smart televisions and consoles generally do not recognise it
  • In browsers direct playback with the <video> tag does not work
  • Social media and web upload forms do not accept it, or convert it on their own side
  • Modern editing programs struggle to import it

The interesting thing is that even on Windows the situation is not what it used to be. Although the operating system still opens it, the default applications and modern software increasingly work around MP4.

The most critical point: this conversion is always a re-encode

When moving from MKV to MP4, most of the time only the container changes and no quality loss occurs. With WMV that path is completely closed.

The MP4 container carries codecs such as H.264 and H.265. It does not carry WMV3 and VC-1. On the audio side MP4 expects AAC, and it does not take WMA.

So moving from WMV to MP4 means everything inside the file being produced from scratch: the picture is decoded frame by frame and re-compressed with H.264, and the audio is encoded from WMA to AAC.

That has two honest consequences:

A certain amount of quality loss occurs. This is unavoidable. Because re-encoding compresses again a picture that was already compressed in the source, it creates a second generation loss. With good settings it usually goes unnoticed by the naked eye, but technically it is there.

The operation takes time. On a long, high resolution file it can run for minutes. During the operation your computer or the server is performing genuine computation.

An additional obstacle: DRM protection

In the period when WMV was widespread, Microsoft also offered the ability to add licence-based protection to files. Corporate training content, purchased films and files coming from subscription services were frequently distributed with this protection.

If you have a file like that, conversion is not possible — whichever tool you try. You can usually tell a file is protected from it asking for a licence when it opens, or from it only playing on one particular computer. In that case the only route is to obtain an unprotected version from the source that provides the content.

So what should you do?

If you have old WMV files, the sensible approach is this:

Convert without deleting the originals. Because the operation is lossy, keeping the source keeps your options open should a better method appear in future.

Set priorities. Convert the files you genuinely want to watch or share. Processing hundreds of files without ever looking at them may be a waste of time.

Check the result on detailed scenes. The places where the loss will show most are scenes with movement and complexity; do not decide by looking at a static talking-head scene.

In summary

WMV is a technology that did a good job in its own era but lost the race because it did not spread as an open standard. Its problem today is not poor quality but lack of support: devices do not have the hardware to decode WMV3, and software is dropping that support too.

Moving to MP4 is not a preference here, it is close to a necessity. And unlike MKV or MOV conversions, this move always requires a genuine re-encode. You pay a certain amount of quality — and in return you get a file that is genuinely openable.

Why will my WMV file not open on a Mac at all?

WMV is a technology Microsoft developed for its own ecosystem, and the WMV3 and VC-1 codecs inside it are not natively supported on Apple devices. There were separate plugins for the Mac at one point, but those have not been maintained for a long time. Today the practical solution is to use a player such as VLC that carries its own decoders inside it, or to convert the file to MP4. The second offers a permanent solution because the file then opens on every device.

Will quality drop when I turn WMV into MP4?

Yes, it drops a certain amount and that is unavoidable. The MP4 container cannot carry the WMV3 and VC-1 codecs, so re-encoding the picture to H.264 or H.265 is mandatory. Re-encoding is a lossy operation and some detail always goes. With a good bitrate chosen, that loss usually goes unnoticed by the naked eye, but technically it is there and it cannot be undone.

Can I just change the extension from .wmv to .mp4 by hand?

No, absolutely not. WMV files use a container called ASF, which has a structure completely different from MP4's. Changing the extension does not touch anything inside the file, it only causes the player to interpret it wrongly and most likely not to open it at all. With related formats such as MOV and MP4 that trick sometimes works, but with WMV the gap is far too wide.

I have a DRM protected WMV file, can I convert it?

No. Windows Media technology was widely used at one point to add licence-based protection to files, and files with that protection cannot be converted. If your file asks for a licence when it opens, or only plays on one particular computer, this is most likely your situation. With files of that kind the only thing that can be done is to obtain an unprotected version from the source that legally provides the content.
